Dennis
Walters, an internationally-acclaimed
trick-shot artist, is
one of golf’s remarkable stories
of perseverance and determination.
He travels throughout
the country providing an entertaining exhibition
that showcases incredible
skill while also spreading
the message that having
a disability does not limit people from
achieving their dreams.
Asy a young man, Walters’ future
in golf seemed solidified.
In 1971 he finished 11th
at the U.S. Amateur
Championship and was preparing
to try for a career as
a professional golfer. This
dream was sidelined in 1974 when he suffered
an accident on the
golf course that left him
paralyzed below the waist. While many golfers would
have given up their
dreams of pursuing golf as
a career, Walters embraced
this adversity. During his
rehabilitation, he adapted a swivel
chair onto a golf cart, allowing
him to play from a
seated position. Since this
time he has used the game of golf to promote
his message that all
things are truly possible.
Beginning in 1977, Walters
has been spreading his passion for golf to
audiences throughout the
world with his traveling Golf Show.
Having a deep interest
in promoting the lessons
and values that can be taught
through the game of golf,
Walters has appeared at USGA
championships, PGA Tour and
LPGA events, and has visited chapters
of The First Tee. Walters ‘s golf bag, 35 clubs full,
may stretch beyond the limitations
of the Rules of Golf but it certainly
does not lack in variety.
His array of clubs is made
with items such as a fishing rod, a cell phone, and three
club
heads for his self-titled “3 iron.”
In 2008, Walters
was honored with the PGA
Distinguished Service Award.
The honor recognizes outstanding
individuals who display leadership
and humanitarian qualities, including integrity,
sportsmanship and enthusiasm
for the game of golf. Walters
joins such legends as Bob
Hope, Jack Nicklaus, and
Arnold Palmer.
