In
addition to making the game of golf accessible
to all people, the USGA also believes that individuals
with disabilities should be enjoy the game as
a spectator just as able-bodied participants do
at their championships, some of the best competitive
golf in the U.S.
The USGA addresses
the needs of individuals
with disabilities by providing
such things as special
viewing areas for individuals
with disabilities. On course
shuttle services allow
disabled spectators
to get around the course,
provide special parking
and accessible transportation
from the parking area to
clubhouse at their thirteen
national championships,
including the U.S. Open,
U.S. Women’s Open and
U.S. Amateur. Additionally,
as part of their training
prior to a USGA championship,
gallery marshals and appropriate
personnel are informed
of the many ways that
they can assist individuals
to enjoy their time at
the championship to the
fullest.
Starting at the U.S. Women’s
Open in 1995, the USGA furthered their commitment
toward making their championships accessible
by introducing individual electric scooters
at no cost to any patron who would benefit
from this accommodation. The pilot program
was so successful, the program has been expanded
to include all thirteen USGA championships.
